“Come Out And Play The Irish Way, Green Is The Color Of The Day!”

Notes from the President:

A new year begins and we will begin with the officers all being re-elected. As people will say...why screw up a good thing! Congratulations to Chris Allen, Christina Miller, Denise Shannon, and myself...we hold our positions with the club for another year!

This year we need to look forward to celebrating life. The life of the Irish Club, the life of our fellow Americans, our very favorite Irish friends, the Shawnee Sister Cities Organization, and the people who help keep us safe. The Irish Club's big focus this year is to host a reception honoring the men and women who protected us throughout the events of 9/11. This is the ten-year anniversary of a sad, but probable, event in the United States. Our club has been asked to host a 'reception' giving thank to those who made us feel safe, the firefighters, the police officers, and the paramedics. We cannot put a limit on the number of people who can be considered First Responders, but we can offer the biggest Thank You our club can provide. We are looking for volunteers, sponsors, and ideas on how we can go about making this happen. We want to include everyone. If you have an idea or want to make a suggestion, please send them to heatherkachur@att.net. We will begin planning this event in our May meeting to be held on the third Thursday of the month at Court of Appeals Pub, 11121 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas.

As for our regularly scheduled events and my most favorite...the Volunteer Appreciation Picnic to be held on June the 12th. We need a venue, a game plan, and ideas. We appreciate all the time, effort, and hard work that goes in to making the money that substantiates our clubs activities. This year we have scheduling conflicts with some of our members doing double-duty between work and fund-raising and, of course, personal events. Our first fund-raiser is the NASCAR races to be held the 2nd through the 5th of June coinciding with Old Shawnee Days. The racetrack events are our biggest and most profitable fund-raisers. We need all the help we can get. If you are interested in volunteering your time please let me know before the 15th of May. Normally, during race weekends we run two booths, due to scheduling conflicts we had to choose only one. The more people we get to staff and run the booth, the better we are. It is a fun-filled weekend with all kinds of activities for families. Unfortunately, the legal side, only allows volunteers 16 years of age and older, with appropriate supervisions to volunteer.

In teasing Tony S. and our inability to learn to play Rolli-Bolli, we have formed an Irish Club Kickball Team. We play on the Johnson County Parks and Recreation Recreational Adult Kickball League. I challenge you to form a team and come out to play. We are having more fun with this kickball league than most of us imagined. If you can beat us...you can have our lucky wristbands! A special Thank you to Tamara S. for sponsoring our summer league team. We are still wanting sponsors to assist with the overall cost. Tamara...you may own your own personal recreational kickball team! Thank you Thank you Thank you!! I think she deserves a place on our parade banner, no questions asked!

This is the year we 'Go Green.' Monthly meeting notices will be sent out via email. For those of you who still have to have a piece of paper with a stamp on it, call me directly at (913) 544-3046 and leave me a message that you need a paper reminder. We can text, facebook, call, or email notices. What we would like to do is conserve our resources and eliminate the need to recycle paper or fill land space by eliminating mailers unless it is an invitation to a specific event. We will be working towards using recycled paper goods if available. Also, we ask, if you need a paper mailer...please recycle.

You can find the Irish Club on Facebook: Irish American Club of Johnson County (add yourself as a member of our group)

For now, this is an overload of information...stay tuned for more!

Respectfully,

Heather Kachur

President Irish American Club of Johnson County
